new year! good lord.

at the bookstore, i am going to be in charge of the 'history' section. great!! the other day i was in there, standing on the ladder in this section, and it's a very small one, really a cubby if that, and a man walks in and declares himself loudly so that i don't fall off the ladder. 'i know it could have been alarming', he said. yes okok, i said, want me to leave? i mean i'm blocking out the romans, the greeks, the churchill shelf, history of the world, and also history of britain. also i'm making it awkward for you to get to the japan/southeast asia section. no, he says, don't bother. and i wonder what sortof books he's after, but since it's my first day in the history section i'm too scared to ask, as i don't really know it very well yet.

and then i hear him sigh. and then he says OH IT'S SO HARD TO FIND A GOOD BOOK THESE DAYS.

and you know, well, gee. no it's NOT. but clearly he has something to get off his chest so i ask him what he's after and he says OH JUST SOMETHING ABOUT PIRATES! OR, YOU KNOW, CONQUISTADORS! THAT'LL DO! and i cannot for the life of me think of anything we have about pirates or conquistadors. not really. he adds that he's just about exhausted the greeks and romans. i point out, that geez, that's a lot to exhaust. and after a spiteful remark about no, actually, the greeks and romans exhausted HIM, he left.

but i'm excited! the history section! i aim to be very knowledgeable. soon. also later on i did find a pretty good pirates section in the 'adventure/hunting/horses/cats/dogs' part of the store.

i got a new bookcase! it is amazing how my books have expanded so that you can't even tell i GOT a new bookcase. it's already covered. i can't remember how i coped without it and it's only been an hour.

christmas happened! it was good. we had three almoststrangers from mumbai come over and eat/not eat with us, a sortof 'you are away from your family on christmas' gesture. i think because of this we did the most TALKING we've ever done on christmas day, when really we were quite set on taking naps shortly after eating. fun though? the main thing i learned is never to drive in mumbai. there are no traffic lanes. no. traffic. lanes.

today i found out that yawning has nothing to do with being sleepy. or atleast nobody's sure what yawning is for. changes everything.

i was supposed to go to the dentist on monday but my dentist had a family member die and so i was supposed to go today but he's had another family member die. poor man.

i started a job at a bookstore here yesterday ad maybe the best part is that it is right above this bakery, and after 6 pm bread is half price. so i can go and buy a dr.pepper and a loaf of bread for $3 and i am happy, happy.

on the 22nd i have an appointment with the immigration people! oh this reminds me, when i came into the US a couple of weeks ago, i had to have my fingerprints taken. my thumbprints, specifically. this is not easy. it's not easy to do when you are standing directly opposite the little thumbprinting pad, which is sortof tilted and big and awkward anyway. i had to put down all of my bags to do it, tilt my arm, and even then, what a poorly printed thumb. my mum works with nurses and she says some of them have washed their hands so many times that they just plain don't have fingerprints. that's crazy! huh!

driving!!!! i can do it! i forgot how FUN it was, especially around empty jackson at night. the neat thing is realising you remember all the traffic lights. i did get lost coming back from a friend's house. said friend lives approximately five minutes, if that, away from me. it's almost my own neighborhood. alas.

my parents got a new car this morning. a quiet little hybrid. well, it's really actually big? but it's certainly quiet. mum says that when you're driving it at the most 'green' speed, little flowers grow on the dashboard. digital flowers growing inside a car when it's driven at the right speed. the future is here! my toyota doesn't do that, but i still love it. tomorrow i'll drive it 164 miles north and east! biggest journey yet!
