july the tenth! what am i going to do today? i'm going to clean. clean. eat some malteser cookies that i made last night. truth be told, they're a little dull. a little dull. which gives me a reason to attempt baking something else tonight, and so i think i'll go for romany creams: a recipe my aunt gave me nearly two years ago?? that i've not tackled yet because i've had the ones that my granny makes. and they're so good. so good that i don't want to taint them. but, but, i'm 23! i should try, right!? right!

a week ago today i flew to paris and it didn't occur to me that i was really in paris until i was on the metro and the train stopped at 'bastille'. and i looked out the window and on the underground walls there were painted depictions of the storming of the bastille. and dang, it must have been just outside. and that, i thought, was really neat. and i was only in paris for one night, a short night, so i'll have to go back and maybe see that bastille one day.

this weekend in belfast is going to be really hectic because of july 12, a big ole protestant holiday where people march everywhere and get violent and drunk and want to drink catholic blood, almost literally??. i'm hoping i don't look at all catholic (what would that look like?) because i want to go and watch the marches on monday. the road that i live on in belfast is one of the most violent in the city when it comes to this parade - divided by the river lagan into p and c parts - and we, by chance, live on the p half.

but anyway, i'm assembling my outfit for venturing outside on monday. no green and white, but no orange either. oh, belfast.

i just got back from france! from the BEACH in france. i've gone swimming in the mediterranean now. it was like a huge cold very salty swimming pool. hardly any waves. and the beach was topless but really the only people who partake in this are old ladies.

yesterday, on the flight back to belfast, a child kicked my seat with all his might. and he threw his donald duck toy at me twice. i'm going to end this story before it gets nasty.

so far i'm in belfast! so far it's ok. the weather is glum, but tomorrow leah turns 27! i think that's a fine-looking number. now i'm going to go and buy things to make her a cake. flour and things. yellow cake. we're going to go to the zoo and play laser tag too. 27!

i am leaving vienna in a few hours.  oh man!  vienna!  i need to come back.  yesterday i saw the hundertwasser haus.  what a place.   big old blocks of curvy colour.  and people live in it!  jealous, jealous.

i cannot for the life of me remember anything neat i did in 2005.  the year draws a blank.  strange?

i have been making pots, learning pottery!  it is more fun than i anticipated.  it is like playing with mud, i guess, and that's part of why it is so fun?, except in the end, with any luck, you have something you can eat or drink out of or at least toss spare coins in.  most of mine fall into that last category, but i did make a spectacular bowl yesterday, which is nothing to be sneezed at.

ok, ok, going now.  scotland.

Wien!  iäm in vienna.  it is an impressive city.  today i went to the natural history museum and saw dinosaur bones and tons of stuffed animals (not like cuddly toys though) and rooms and rooms full of glittery minerals.  yesterday i gorged mself on schnitzel and beer and cake, and rode on trams and trains, and sat in old fashioned coffee houses where you cannot have cell phones but you can smoke!, and i saw st stephen's cathedral, which is big.  big.

the zoo here is the world's oldest, about 250 years old!, and also was this year voted the world's best, so on monday i am going to go.  there are so many animals on the zoo list, including koalas!  oh man!  and crocodiles and cheetahs.  lions.  bears.  i can't wait.

i was looking at seahorses today at the museum.  live ones.  best ocean creatures?  perhaps?  men give birth!
